Ever considered a beach vacation in Mozambique? There are two Indian Ocean Archipelagos that are more than worth considering. Their reputation is that of exclusivity, pristine beaches and amazing diving opportunities.
The Bazaruto Archipelago is the epitome of privacy. Five islands off the coast of Vilanculos, with long, outstretched beaches that, unlike many beach destinations are not crowded. The two main islands are Benguerra and Bazaruto. These islands form the biggest marine reserve in Africa, with the two Mile Coral Reef to showcase the marine diversity. Think warm turquoise waters, white sand and plenty of activities, albeit snorkeling or relaxing on the beach.
Of course pristine beaches have to go with eco-friendly establishments. But don’t worry, this does not mean you need to sacrifice your creature comforts. Azura Benguerra boasts the first luxury eco-boutique retreat. Unbelievably, the resort was built by hand! From private pools, to excellent cuisine to, most importantly, spectacular ocean views – Azura Benguerra exemplifies the beauty of these islands. And the best part is the islands are easily accessible.
The Quirimbas Archipelago is rated as the place to be for a private island vacation. Tbe Quirimbas are a cluster of 27 islands, just off the coast of Pemba. Several of the islands are not inhabited, which also means the amount of lodges are limited, hence the privacy of the islands – with the favourites being the small Medjumbe Private Island and Quilalea Island. As befitting the Indian Ocean, here you will find long white beaches and azure waters. And of course, where there is water, there is action – scuba diving, snorkeling or more relaxed dhow cruises await you.
For a bit of local history, take the time to visit Ibo Island. Beautiful, but dilapidated buildings are all that remain of this once bustling centre, revolving around the slave trade. If old buildings are not of interest to you, perhaps you would enjoy the craftsmanship of the silver jewellery made on the island with traditional skills passed on from older generations.
The moral of the story is, do not be too hasty to overlook Mozambique as a beach destination – there are several spots on and off its coastline which are safe and which allow you the type of holiday you are looking for.
