Southern Africa is well-known for its exceptional big game viewing opportunities, however these are not restricted to landlocked areas only. The entire coastline is the perfect departure point for sea-going safari’s to see whales, sharks and a host of other fascinating sea creatures.
What is the “Whale Coast”?
Along the coast of South Africa, whales may be seen almost anywhere, in both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, but you will find it easiest to engage with these huge creatures along the aptly-named Whale Coast.
Stretching from Rooiels in the west to Quoi Point in the East, the Whale Coast is awash with unique coastal fynbos, especially between Hangklip and Kleinmond, and is littered with quaint villages as well as exciting things to do.
You can view the flowers on a 4x4 jaunt or on horseback, hike and climb in the hills, or meander along the verdant wine routes and foodie havens found all along the shoreline and inland.
South African Whale Watching
Hermanus is world-famous for its excellent land-based whale watching activities which are easily appreciated at spots like Windsor Bay, Gearing's Point, The Old Harbor, Siever's Punt and Kwaaiwater. Listen out for the town’s Whale Crier, whose sole job consists of alerting tourists to the location of the whales. If you can’t get a booking in this popular town during the peak whale season, from June to November, nearby Kleinmond and Gansbaai will do the trick too.
At Gansbaai and the Grootbos Nature Reserve, you can also take part in exhilarating great white cage diving experiences in the depths of Shark Alley, found just off the coastline of this premier shark viewing destination. If you prefer to keep your feet on terra firma, there are wonderful hiking trails in the area too.
Namibian Whale Watching
Thrilling ocean-side activities are not restricted to South Africa however, the neighboring countries of Namibia and Mozambique also see their fair share of action throughout the year. Humpback, Minke and Southern right whales brush past the coast of Namibia every year from July to November. These animals may be viewed from land or on specialized excursions around Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Pelican Point.
Whale Watching in Mozambique
Luxurious island resorts, such as Azura Benguerra off the coast of Mozambique, provide plenty of opportunity to get up close to whales and even dugongs on expertly guided outings.
Make the most of your Southern African safari by including these enthralling sites in your itinerary.
