Africa is one of the world’s most historic destinations, filled with enigmas from times gone by. We all know about the many monuments and museums dedicated to colonial pursuits but how about trying something different on your next trip?
For a true blast from the past, try fitting in some of these historic places in Africa into your southern African safari itinerary.
Kangumene Rock Engravings, Botswana
The Kangumene Rock Engravings are one of the best showcases of ancient San culture in Africa. These rock paintings feature human and animal footprints, handprints, weapons, and geometric designs.
What makes them unique is their total divergence from the usual shamanistic paintings of animals and hunt scenes so common elsewhere.
Kolmanskop, Namibia
Kolmanskop is one of Namibia’s most fascinating places. It’s an eerie ghost town that was once the country’s richest and most extravagant town. Now, where the rich trappings and sound of merriment were once the order of the day, there’s only devastation and the mournful whistling of the wind. The town was abandoned shortly after the local supply of diamonds ran dry and soon fell victim to the relentless shifting sands of the desert.
Robben Island, South Africa
Robben Island is a small island located in Cape Town’s Table Bay. It once served as a maximum-security prison housing several significant historical figures.
Why would you want to visit this barren, inhospitable place? Because Nelson Mandela was once one of those prisoners and the museum tours offer incredible insights into his time there.
Pemba, Mozambique
Pemba is home to wonderful white beaches and excellent reefs for snorkelling and scuba diving. This run-down city’s home to a few interesting spots including the Pona Romera Lighthouse, the Slave Trade Fort and is your gateway to the Quirimbas national Park where you can see evidence of the historic Arabic, Portuguese, and local influences that shaped Mozambique.
