BLOG 5 Things You Should Never Do in Johannesburg

Are you landing at OR Tambo Airport to head off on your Southern African safari? It’s a great idea to spend some time in Johannesburg and we can tell you just how you should and shouldn’t be doing it.

This world-class city is a hub of action and historic sites. It’s well worth a visit, but make sure you never do the following during your stay.

Don’t Assume You’ll See Wildlife Wherever You Go

Many travelers arrive in South Africa under the mistaken impression that they will see wildlife wherever they go – lions roaming the streets, donkeys pulling carts and elephants on your patio!

While you can most definitely see some amazing indigenous creatures of South Africa, you’ll have to head out for a few hours to one of the nearby game reserves or take a trip to the Johannesburg Zoo if you want to see them in the city!

Never Say No to a Date with Lady Luck

One of the nearby game parks, Pilanesberg National Park is located 21/2 hours’ drive from the city, adjacent to Sun City Entertainment World. At Sun City, you will encounter every amusement you can imagine, from gambling at the casino to soaring in a hot air balloon, golf, a wave pool and so much more.

Closer to Johannesburg, you can take your chances at Montecasino, an entertainment village with a casino, bird park, live entertainment and international eats.

Avoid Shopping in Huge Shopping Centers

If you like crowds, glitz and glamour, Johannesburg has many excellent malls such as the Nelson Mandela Square with its iconic statue. However, these venues attract millions of visitors every year.

For a more relaxed and authentic experience, shop like a local and head for the Neighbourgoods Market or browse among the Panorama Flea market in Joburg south. You can pick up some delicious local eats, artisan produce and handcrafted curios at these local markets.

Don’t Confine Yourself to the City

While Johannesburg offers a wide range of cosmopolitan diversions such as museums, theatres and galleries, you can also find nature secreted in pristine spots around the city limits.

Émmarentia Dam is a lovely venue to relax or paddle a kayak, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden is perfect for picnics and you can catch an outdoor show at Rhodes Park’s al fresco amphitheater.

Don’t Get Stuck in the Present

Take a trip back in time to Gold Reef city where you will find a reconstructed Gold Rush village, quaint shops and the chance to plunge into the bowels of the earth down a mine shaft.

You can also go right back to the dawn of mankind at the world-renowned Cradle of Mankind at Maropeng, about half an hour’s drive from Johannesburg.
