BLOG Cape Town Hotel Rises to the Challenges of 2020

The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel is well-known for its extraordinary levels of luxury and is a popular choice for tourists wanting top level accommodation amid the bustle of Sea Point.

Now, the plush rooms of this beloved Cape Town hotel stand empty, no smells of gourmet cuisine waft through the restaurant, and the phones, once abuzz with incoming bookings, have fallen silent.

These are scenes in accommodation establishments across Cape Town and the country, as a nation waits for lockdown restrictions to pass.

A Different Approach for Different Times

Yet, this prestigious property’s not giving up without a fight, pulling out all the stops with innovative ways to remain operational during these difficult times.

This four-star icon of the Atlantic Seaboard has turned its attentions to more mundane affairs in an effort to keep its employees occupied and help offset the losses incurred by empty beds.

According to the hotel’s general manager, Chris Godenir, the team at The Peninsula’s leaving no stone unturned in finding other ways to use the hotel’s assets to earn some income.

New Services Available at The Peninsula

The new services on offer at The Peninsula include a laundry service as well as housekeeping and maintenance services for hire. These days you don’t need a booking at the hotel to take advantage of the hotel staffs’ generations of expertise.

Current services offered by The Peninsula All-Suite hotel include the following:

  • Washing of large laundry items like duvets, towels, cushion covers, curtains, and duvet covers at a cost of R50 per item. Locals can drop their load off at the hotel’s new ‘laundry drive-thru’ and pick them up at the same place the next day.
  • Customers who live within 5km of the hotel can enjoy the luxury of free pick-ups for their heavy laundry items.
  • They can also hire the services of an expert housekeeper for R350 per three-hour shift, a service that’s perfectly suited to small businesses in the area. The hotel will drop off and pick up the helper at a pre-arranged time.
  • For an hourly rate, the hotel’s experienced handymen can be hired to sort out all those odd jobs that have been put off for so long, from faulty light fittings to broken cupboards.
  • If working at home and home schooling isn’t working out for the family, computer workstations are available for hire at a rate of R60 for 30 minutes.
  • Similarly, if you’re looking for a safe and convenient venue for an important business meeting, hire a private office at R200 for the first hour and R100 per hour after that.

These initiatives showcase the adaptability and versatility of the tourism sector in South Africa. Now, as things slowly start to normalize, it’s up to us to support local tourism as much as we can.
