BLOG Cape Town’s Harvest of Hope

There are few places you will visit on your southern African safari that will enthral you like Cape Town does. While this incredible city is well-known for its cultural diversity, the best beaches in SA, gorgeous scenery and more, it is also filled with poignant examples of people working together for the greater good.

Abalimi is one of these instances.

Harvest of Hope

Abalimi has at its heart the empowerment of the poor people in Cape Town’s most disadvantaged areas such as the Cape Flats. They achieve this by promoting urban agriculture, improving their surroundings by introducing vegetation, and by repairing their ravaged natural environment as far as possible.

One of these worthy initiatives is the Harvest of Hope Project. While Abalimi gives the farmers the resources, training and support they need to grow the vegetables, Harvest of Hope makes sure their produce finds a market and gets there.

Community Service

What could possibly surpass receiving your week’s supply of fresh locally grown vegetables without setting foot in a supermarket? Knowing that the proceeds of the produce are going towards supporting local communities – that’s what.

Harvest of hope pledges that all produce grown by their community of backyard farmers is sold. Any orders that are not collected by the cut-off time are then donated to worthy organisations.

How it Works

Members sign up for weekly vegetable packs and pay for them online. These vegetable hampers are harvested fresh, packed and delivered to several convenient pick up points around the city. In instances where companies, restaurants or cooperatives order more than 15 boxes a time, Harvest of Hope will even deliver their produce free of charge.

This a brilliant concept for those who love healthy eating but lack the time to shop efficiently for all their fresh produce.

The project provides a steady source of income for the impoverished folk in the poorer areas such as Khayelitsha, Nyanga, and Philippi. At the same time it also empowers them with new skills and gives them motivation and hope for the future.

Abalimi assists the farmers by setting up their gardens with the help of sponsors, training them to tend these gardens and by providing ongoing support for their efforts.

You can benefit too

You can be assured of the freshest local ingredients during the Cape Town leg of your Southern African safari when you dine at any one of the leading Cape Town restaurants that support Harvest of Hope.
