Are you ready to take the plunge or already an experienced dive enthusiast? The waters off the coast of South Africa’s Sodwana Bay are the perfect playground for you during your southern African safari.

The ultimate dive destination

Sodwana Bay offers some of the best diving and safest waters in the world, with 9 dive sites available to explore at will. Diving or snorkeling you have the chance to mingle with 1 200 species of marine creatures among 50km/30 miles of coral reefs, caves, and pinnacles.

You can look forward to close encounters with longnose hawkfish, manta rays, tiger sharks, scorpion fish, swallowtail triggerfish, huge crayfish, moray eels and paper fish in these waters.

If you haven’t been diving before Sodwana Bay is the perfect place to learn. There are 10 PADI dive schools around Sodwana with experienced instructors and all the gear you need to get started on your aquatic adventure.

Where to stay

We recommend at least 3 nights or more to make the most of your stay on this unspoilt stretch of  coastline. Accommodation options are varied and include bed and breakfast as well as self-catering, with the option for picnics or breakfast on the beach.

Many of the lodges offer transport to the best dive sites as part of their package, or you can get in touch with one of the activity operators in town to take you around.

Further afield

Sodwana Bay is located on the far north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, close to Mpumalanga and the St Lucia Wetlands World Heritage site. It is the perfect place to include in your southern African safari whether you opt to travel onwards to the exclusive lodges bordering Kruger National Park, or venture inland to KwaZulu-Natal’s big five destinations like Hluhluwe or Phinda.

This central location is a short drive from Tembe Elephant Park, where you can see elephant and wild dogs. The fascinating cultural site at Kosi Bay with its ancient fish traps is also nearby.

Dry land excursions in the area include tours to see the forested dune lands of South Africa’s largest lake, Lake Sibaya, micro lighting, quad biking and turtle walks. Further watery diversions take the form of canoe tours and deep-sea fishing.
