BLOG Loving Southern Africa’s Wildest Places

Photographer, author and adventurer – that is how one of Africa’s finest photographers describes himself. Scott Ramsay has something to say to all those who would embark on – as he did, the journey of a lifetime on any southern African safari. Are you listening?

About Scott Ramsay

Born in Cape Town, Scott Ramsay grew up in the shadow of Table Mountain spending many youthful vacations on southern African safaris to Etosha, Kruger and the Kalahari Gemsbok National Parks. He studied journalism at Cape Town University and completed his Masters at North-western University in Chicago.

Talking about his new book Love Wild Africa, accomplished wildlife photographer, Scott Ramsay, reveals how one photograph changed his destiny forever. A single image of “756 Elephants” by Peter Beard caused him to turn his back on his swish office job to answer the conservation call of his homeland.

He returned to South Africa, took a course in advanced photography and set off on his mission. With the endorsement of SanParks, Scott spent a year travelling through 40 of South Africa’s National Parks, from Table Mountain National Park across the country to Kruger National Park.

Capturing wild spaces

Here, he met and interviewed all the stalwarts of conservation he encountered, attempting to capture not just the beauty but also the values they represented. He has knelt at the feet of African elephants, crawled through caves and submerged himself in raging rivers hoping to capture the very essence of all he saw.

Ramsay’s exploits have led to journalistic fame across the world. His works and words spread far and wide via British Airways Magazine, Getaway, Wild, Africa Geographic, News24, Cape Times, Leisure Wheels and Geo Germany among others.

He says, “Already, wildlife tourism is a key income generator for local communities. In 100 years, this will be even more true than it is today”. Glancing through his work is sure to provide you with enough inspiration to fuel your travels for almost that long.

The message is clear, - ‘Love Wild Africa’. Conservation, communities and tourism must join hands to preserve the natural heritage of these priceless expanses.
