BLOG Paddling on the Zambezi with Royal Chundu

Royal Chundu holds pride of place in a secluded spot along the banks of the Zambezi River. From here you can venture on day trips to Victoria Falls, just 30km away, take a trip to Botswana to discover the excitement of Chobe National Park, or experience one of the most immersive activities along this watery stretch.

Canoeing on the Zambezi

Canoe trips set off in the early morning from the Katombora rapids upstream from Royal Chundu. The excursions take place under the auspices of an experienced game guard to guide you along every watery inch of this adventure.

From your starting point, you’ll glide gently downriver, winding your way around islands and through channels. All along the way, there’s a chance to see an abundance of Zambia’s flourishing birdlife and some of Zambia’s unique wildlife on their way to the water’s edge. You’re not here for the game viewing though. This activity is the perfect opportunity to snap once-in-a-lifetime photographs from a unique perspective at your leisure and to fully experience your Zambian safari with all of your senses.

The sound of paddles swishing gently through the water is infinitely relaxing, with only a few small rapids along the way to keep you on your toes and give you a little taste of true Zambezi river rafting.

Just when you think life can’t possibly get any better, it’s time to disembark on a private island and enjoy a picnic with a difference on the shores of this powerful torrent. Afterwards, there’s a little more time for reflection before you find yourself back at Royal Chundu, ready for another day of exciting activities or poolside relaxation.

Making the Most of Your Experience

The very best way to get the most out of this unusual river activity is to be present in the moment.

Leave your modern-day trappings (and your worries) far behind and be let nature entertain you for a while. A Zambezi canoe safari is no place for loud music and shenanigans. It’s also not the venue for a swim – keep your body parts in the boat, there may be hippos about!

Ideally, you should wear inconspicuous clothing like you would for any safari and keep noise levels to a minimum. Sun protection and a hat are vital essentials for any African water activities and a waterproof bag for your camera is a good idea – just in case.

While you can expect to see much game during your trip down river, it is an excellent opportunity to find out more about Zambia’s rich wildlife heritage and local culture. Your guide will answer any and all questions with the usual grace and friendliness that Zambian people are so famous for.

Get in touch if you’d like to experience the ultimate way to discover the beauty of Zambia from a different angle.
