What could be better than falling asleep to the sounds of the wild in your plush southern African safari lodge accommodation with sumptuous linens surrounding you and the sounds of the bush all around? A thousand stars punctuating the deep black skies overhead, that’s what.
A Premier Night Out
Sleep outs are becoming ever more popular as safari-goers seek to immerse themselves even more in nature during their wilderness experiences. It’s a move that was anticipated by Lion Sands when they built their first star bed on a platform above the Sabi Sands landscape.
Now there are a few more options scattered across southern Africa. While some are ultra-luxurious, others offer a more back-to-nature experience, deliberately toning down on the frills.
MORE Experiences
MORE offers several treehouse experiences within the Lion Sands and has just added a new experience to its portfolio. The Marataba Tree house is elevated off the ground against a cliff face offering panoramic views over the Marakele Game Reserve.
This elevated construction offers only the basics. There is no electricity or shower although running water and a WC are provided. Guests are transported to the treehouse by safari vehicle and spend the night in a deluxe double bed open to the balmy night air.
During the overnight stay, guests are totally submerged in nature, enjoying a candle-lit gourmet picnic dinner under the stars. The inky black African skies are sure to put on a stellar display featuring millions of glittering orbs.
A backdrop of night song from the full quota of nocturnal creatures is almost guaranteed! It’s the ultimate romantic escape and takes date-night to a whole new level.
The next morning, guests are collected once more by a safari guide and can embark on a game drive or choose to go straight back to the lodge if preferred.
All the necessary safety precautions are in place and guests are provided with a 2-way radio in case of emergencies.
Sleeping Out in Zambia
In South Luangwa, Zambia, this unique experience has been taken up, or rather down, a notch. Here, you will forego the elevated platform in favor of a bed-roll and a mosquito net.
The sleep outs take place on the sandy river bed alongside the Luwi River. A senior guide, an armed scout, a camp assistant and a chef will accompany you on your trip to make sure you have an enjoyable and safe night under the stars.
With only your chaperones and a campfire for company, you don’t get any closer to nature than this.
