Babylonstoren - An extraordinarily 'homegrown' Winelands experience. While most may be familiar with, or have at least heard of the Cape Winelands, one particular werf stands out as synonymous with extraordinary – Babylonstoren. Having been aptly described as paradise found, Babylonstoren is one of the oldest and best-preserved Cape Dutch Homesteads. Founded in 1690 and complete with a leaning bell tower and historic entrance, the Cape Dutch feel extends into every detail, including the guest suites themselves, with their ornate gabling and thatch roofs.
Not just for visitors staying overnight though, this werf is nestled on over 200 hectares of working farmland in the Drakenstein Valley. The homestead is surrounded by the majestic Du Toitskloof, Simonsberg and Franschhoek mountain ranges, and offers magnificent views and a seemingly endless variety of things to do.
From wine tasting and wine tours to canoeing on the dam or mountain biking through the fynbos and vineyards, the main attraction for many are the plentiful gardens – truly needing to be seen to be believed!
Growing everything from fruit and vegetables to herbs, spices and even nuts, the abundant gardens, orchards and vineyards invite both guests and day visitors to wander about in Alice in Wonderland fashion, and even join in the harvesting, picking and planting of the produce. Keeping the focus on organic and home-grown, the 100 snail harvesting ducks are a sight to behold and daily garden tours are also offered, sure to inspire and enchant the ‘green thumb’ in us all, no matter how small it may be.
Inspired by the season’s produce, delicious delights are offered in Babylonstoren’s signature restaurant Babel, which is another example of the Cape’s Culinary Excellence offerings. Here you can enjoy a mouth-watering three-course meal, much of which is truly ‘home grown’. For a slightly more relaxed affair, visit The Greenhouse instead and enjoy what are likely to be the most beautiful salads and sandwiches you have ever laid eyes on or wrapped your mouth around. Freshly brewed teas and other liquid infusions, from the homesteads own backyard of course, are also on offer.
For those hot summer days, the farm dam is an excellent spot to enjoy a ‘proper’ South African swim, or, if you prefer a little more luxury, you are invited to lounge by the pool or visit the Spa for a pampering treat.
The magnificent setting also lends itself to superb photographic opportunities and South African birdwatchers will be truly spoilt in this natural wonderland, which is home to not only a myriad of wild bird species but also domestic chickens and pigeons, which wander the grounds.
Whether young or old, travelling as a family or solo, expect to be continually and pleasantly surprised at Babylonstoren, a truly extraordinary Cape Winelands experience.
