BLOG South Africa - Mountain Biking

Always on the lookout for ways to impress visitors and to show off the scenic landscapes and magnificent wildlife of the countryside, South Africa offers a number of opportunities to explore the numerous game parks within its borders.  Here, you can drive, walk, ride on elephants and horses, balloon, quad bike, and hit the not-so-beaten track on a mountain bike in pursuit of fresh air, great views, and abundant game.

Mountain biking tours through game reserves are fast becoming one of the more adventurous ways to enjoy a wildlife safari in South Africa, especially with the rise in popularity of these cycles and of fitness-based activities in general.

Several reserves offer the opportunity to cycle on African soil, namely Kruger National Park, Timbavati, Madikwe, Pilanesberg, Phinda, Welgevonden and the Addo Elephant national park.

All of these provide exceptional mountain bike trails in the company of experienced rangers who will enthral you with their bush-lore and make sure that you don’t get lost while exploring the many trails in the area.  Usually, the rangers are armed as a precaution against wild animals, but this is more to put participants at ease than anything else. Most wild animals are not particularly interested in cyclists and will either ignore you or move off quickly.

A mountain bike safari provides a very different perspective on your surroundings and may be enjoyed amongst a range of landscapes, from steep mountainsides to coastal plains.

Although a reasonable degree of fitness is required to participate in one of these adventures, most establishments will provide a choice of trails to suit your skill and staying power.  Mountain bikes, helmets, backpacks and water are also supplied during your trail.  Both morning and afternoon rides of varying durations can be undertaken and some reserves even offer a full day package.

The longer rides will often include sundowners, lunch or tea out in the bush under a shady tree, with birds chirping overhead and the chance to view passing game species at close quarters while you enjoy your break.

A mountain biking tour through one of South Africa’s game reserves is a privilege and wonderful way to get some fresh air and exercise while you take in the pristine wilderness around you.
