Namibia

The Namibian Government has set aside N$245 million (€15.2m) to improve the following aspects of Hosea Kutako international Airport near Windhoek:

  • Modernization of the check-in and departure halls, ventilation systems, arrival halls, luggage handling areas, and security screening points.
  • Installing security systems like closed circuit security screens and intrusion detection methods.
  • introduction of the latest self-check-in technology as well as state-of-the-art screening machines for passengers and luggage.

The upgrades are expected to be completed by October 2019 and will be instrumental in attracting even greater numbers of travelers to this fascinating country which is filled with amazing creatures, natural wonders and rich cultural diversity.

 

Zimbabwe

 

VICTORIA Falls Airport is set for yet another US$200 million upgrade courtesy of China’s the Export-Import Bank. These improvements include expanding the runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft and an extra 1 million passengers annually.

 

KLM and Emirates have already expressed their intention to operate flights to this scenic destination, and more airlines are sure to follow suit.

 

Zambia

 

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport has been the subject of ongoing refurbishment as the country aims to revive its national airline.

 

The proposed amendments are believed to be 70% complete already, at a cost of US$360 million and include: 

  • A passenger terminal capable of accommodating 4 million passengers annually
  • Six aero bridges
  • Fire and rescue stations
  • An in-transit hotel
  • Air traffic control tower
  • The Presidential Pavilion
  • Cargo terminal
  • Commercial complex with an office park and retail shopping mall

Travelers to the home of the walking safari can look forward to enjoying these new facilities form October 2019.
 
Botswana

 

While Maun Airport’s ongoing plans to upgrade have encountered several stumbling blocks the end is in sight for this popular southern African safari destination.

 

In the meantime, the airport has undergone a few superficial upgrades such as a thorough exterior paint job, rearranging the interior for better space management and new carpets.

 

South Africa

 

 

South Africa continues to thrive as one of southern Africa’s most in-demand tourist destinations and all three of the country’s major airports are upgraded regularly to accommodate the ever growing numbers of visitors.

 

  • King Shaka Airport will soon be welcoming flights from British Airways
  • Cape Town International Airport is getting a new domestic arrivals terminus and having its runway realigned.
  • OR Tambo International Airport will receive upgrades to accommodate larger aircraft and an extensive makeover to Terminal A. Upgrades to the security systems with new scanning technology and biometric solutions are also underway.

 

Most of these improvements to South Africa’s airports will be complete by 2020.
