This year didn’t live up to anyone’s expectations across the board but there’s light at the end of the tunnel for South African tourism and particularly the Cape Winelands.
This is thanks to a new Netflix movie that highlights this beautiful part of the country and the award-winning wines that go with it.
Another Tomorrow is a feel-good romantic comedy with a strong focus on finding your voice through healing.
Set in Stellenbosch, the film centres around a South African born character who returns from New York to help rescue the failing family wine estate, with his Icelandic fiancé in tow. The story focuses on her journey towards self-realisation via her friendship with a dynamic local winemaker.
It’s been described as a union between Eat, Pray, Love and Marriage Story.
So far, everything’s on track to start filming in October 2021 for release in early 2022.
With the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies pushing proposal changes to impose a 30% local content quota on streaming services, this new movie bodes well for the production sector in SA.
Inviting the World to the Cape Winelands
Thanks to its universal themes, producers anticipate the movie will have worldwide appeal. This is good news for the South African wine Industry as well as the burgeoning film industry based at Cape Town Film Studios outside the Mother City.
The studio itself is already a hotspot for movie producers looking for diverse locations, low costs, and innovative solutions to common industry problems. Prior to the pandemic, the Cape Town studio was booked end to end with international production crews – there are a lot more movies filmed there than you think.
Some of the movies that had scenes filmed in this location include:
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- District 9
- Dredd
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- Maze Runner: Death Cure
- Safe House
It’s expected that the movie will create plenty of great publicity for the Cape winelands, struggling after a year of alcohol bans and restricted trading hours.
Historically, movies can have a huge impact on tourism. Studies suggest that popular films can increase travel to a region by as much as 300%.
For instance, Iceland became a top tourist spot since it was used as a location for Game of Thrones, and New Zealand tourism was boosted by Lord of the Rings.
