If you are looking for somewhere to swing a club during your Southern African safari, Namibia will not disappoint. The country has several challenging golf courses, each with unique attributes making for an unforgettable round.
Rossmund Golf Course
Rossmund Golf Course is the driest fully grassed golf course in the world and one of only 5 registered all-grass desert courses in existence. Located just outside Swakopmund, this 73-par, 18-hole course features exceptional views of the spectacular Namib sand dunes contrasted against manicured fairways, and surprisingly, water features.
Here you will stroll among greens and fairways which have been planted in the sand, unlike the norm, where bunkers are carved out of the grassy landscaping, and as you progress you are likely to come across a herd or two of springbok taking advantage of this year-round grazing.
The course complies with international standards, providing a worthwhile challenge, and features the full spectrum of facilities that you would expect at a venue of this caliber, such as a clubhouse, practice areas, a bar, restaurant, lounge and changing rooms as well as comprehensive banqueting facilities.
It takes over a million liters of recycled water per day, provided courtesy of the nearby housing development, to maintain this green oasis in the desert.
Omeya Golf and Residential Oasis
Located just 30km outside of Windhoek, Omeya Golf course is spectacular, dotted with camelthorn trees and presenting incredible views of the surrounding mountains. Designed by Peter Matkovich, you can look forward to 18 challenging holes and a variety of wildlife and bird species to admire along the way.
Walvis Bay Golf Course
The Walvis Bay Golf Course is everything you expect from a desert course, with miles of sand in between the grass greens and tees of this 9-hole course. This difficult course provides a worthy challenge under these unique circumstances and is not recommended for beginners.
Oranjemund Golf Club
This golf courses’ claim to fame is the relentless wind that blows here, to torment you during your game. Wide fairways are contradicted by punishing roughs providing a worthy challenge for all levels of golfer, with the clubhouse offering solace after a challenging round. As this course is located in the diamond-rich Sperrgebiet area, you need a special permit to play here, but this is easily arranged in advance.
